Now, it boasts one of the largest libraries of legal anime content on the Internet, with providers stretching from Japanese broadcasters and studios to American distributors and subsidiaries (Asian live-action content is also hosted). Nearly every show is available for free (though ad-supported), with video quality as high as H.264 on most. FUNimation Video boasts one of the largest libraries of anime online. Fueled by its sizable stable of titles, the site reflects the distributor's strong participation in digital distribution, with entire series being made available for free viewing in either Japanese with English subtitles or dubbed in English. Recently-licensed shows can also be found, even prior to their disc release, as well as simulcasts. The site also lists shows from Toei Animation (digital only, no DVD release is part of their partnership), Viz Media (same as Toei, but handles own DVD releases), and the critically-lauded "noitaminA" anime block from Fuji TV (same as Toei deal). Many of the videos are embedded from Hulu (though it does not necessarily mean you will also find them there...), though they do have self-hosted ones, as well.

Those looking for a little more substance may also want to check out the studio's own self-titled channel, which contains the first episodes of a few shows (in Japanese, with no subtitles).

Download Client: Required (iTunes)
Audio: Japanese w/ English Subtitles, English Dubbed

An industry leader and revolutionary service, Apple's iTunes Store paved the way for the wave of digital distribution with its expansive library of low-cost songs and video that could be enjoyed on either the company's equally ubiquitous and groundbreaking iPod media player or on one's own computer. Anime companies have been privy to the reach of the service and had thus made some of their offerings available there. Due to how they work, the links listed ahead will automatically open the iTunes application and display the page there and not in one's browser (outside of a "redirect" page).

Anime television shows can either be purchased by episode or by season. Due to the lack of an animation section in the Movie listings, anime movies aren't organized under a specific banner, but some can be found at this link. Lastly, there is also the search box in the upper right-hand corner of the Store window and the Viewers Also Bought on the pages of each show, which may also help you find more titles.

KADOKAWA Anime Channel (17+)

Language: Japanese

Major anime and manga producer and distributor Kadokawa has its own streaming video channel on the popular YouTube site. Among the titles present include BLEACH, NANA, Honey & Clover, and Monster, as well as first series and sequels to Naruto and Inuyasha.

YouTube (17+)

The great pioneer of online video hosting, YouTube, has sought out partnerships over the years in hopes of supporting legal viewing of copyrighted works and to curtail illegally posted ones on their site. With the advent of digital distribution across the board and anime being among its largest categories of videos, they naturally caught the attention of numerous companies from both sides of the Pacific. Along with the site's support of posting entire series and movies, as well as HD-quality video, many anime companies and producers have come aboard from both sides of the Pacific, including FUNimation, Bandai Ent., Kadokawa, The Anime Network, Manga Ent., Kodansha, TMS, Lantis, GONG, and 4KidsTV. Most video tend to be subtitled, but there is still a substantial amount of dubbed ones. However, with so many providers and users from around the world, some may find more than a few videos region-locked (more common among Japanese ones, which may be viewable to those citizens only). Some shows may also be found only in the rental section (i.e. the subbed version of a show could be available for free, but the dubbed version can only be rented for a small fee).

-:Anime On The Go!!:- [iPhone/iPod touch Only]
With the advent of mobile Internet in smartphones and multimedia players, a few online video providers have chimed in on it. Through the use of "apps," one can offer their services through a streamlined program on those devices that makes it easy and simple to watch your favorite shows wherever you are over a Wi-Fi or cellular connection.

As I only have an iPod touch, I can only attest to what is available for that device. iPhones and iPads may enjoy the same services, but 3G connectivity may vary among apps. And so, everything below is based on what is available via iPod touch (2nd Gen.), with iOS 4.1, and over Wi-Fi. However, those that have a different smartphone or media player may still want to use this list as a reference to see if those services or apps are available on their own device.

The apps can be downloaded from the iPhone/iPod touch's App Store and from Apple's iTunes desktop media player. iPad users may also be able to find these in their own store, but not every app may be tailored to or available for the device (those that are will be noted). The app links below will open up either program depending on which machine you are using.

iPad Version: Available

One of the largest anime video sites on the Net makes its substantial library available to members and subscribers alike with their very own app. Though sign-up is not necessary to watch the videos (like on the website), it is free and in some cases required if you want to watch any age-restricted videos. Membership Subscribers, however, are not subject to ads and can enjoy access to particular titles that others cannot (e.g. the first Naruto series, Fairy Tail).

GONG Anime TV Previews (17+)
Developer: Metranome
Price: Free
Streaming: No
Downloadable: Yes [Free, Some Pay (rentals)]
Audio: Japanese w/ English Subtitles, English Dubbed

The European-based digital distributor's app was the first-ever anime video-type centered around downloadable content. Rather than streaming titles like most apps, it downloads new video as soon as the app is opened. These can be saved, deleted, and redownloaded, and thus, can be rewatched without an Internet connection (however, you cannot transfer the videos to your computer and save or rewatch them there). Shows from Enoki Films USA largely fill out their ranks, along with a handful of others, and episodes are normally separated into three parts. Non-anime related content, such as interviews and concert footage of European acts, are also present (though in the minority), as well as a rental section, with rates at $1.99 /episode.

Streaming: Yes [Pay]
Downloadable: Yes (very few) [Pay]

Note: Search for "zoovision" to find apps in App Store, or click here or the above link if on computer

Through a partnership with The Anime Network (formerly a part of the defunct ADV Films), ZooVision offers numerous apps centered around particular shows on its airwaves. Each individual app is dedicated to either a single episode of a show (sometimes more) or an entire movie, and not only offers the anime, but also exclusive wallpaper, story and character details, and, in some cases, access to a discussion board to chat with others about it. Most of the videos are streamed, though some may be downloadable. A few of the apps may even allow for the purchase of additional episodes from inside the apps themselves, rather than downloading another app to watch the next episode (they run at about the same price, so it is more of a matter of convenience than savings). Titles primarily consists of those from Sentai Filmworks (also formerly of the defunct ADV Films).

A little-known Original Net Anime (ONA) from animation studio manglobe (Samurai Champloo, Ergo Proxy), the comedic short-length fantasy tale (or "web comic", as the studio calls it) had the distinction of debuting first with an English language track with Japanese subtitles, and a Japanese language track (with, curiously enough, the same Japanese subtitles from before still present) afterwards. As a bonus, a comic short of the story, done by the creation group behind it, is available here in a PDF format (in Japanese only).

Yawarakame is the eccentric brainchild of Those Who Hunt Hunt Elves and Dokkoida?! mangaka Yu Yagami and animation studio ufotable (Kara no Kyoukai, Ninja Nonsense, Dokkoida?!). Beside the tale centering on a soft-shelled turtle, perhaps its most unique feature is that seiyuu Miyuki Sawashiro (Di Gi Charat's Puchiko, Bakemonogatari's Suruga) voices all of the characters in the characters in it. One can view the first episode (two minutes in length) by moving their mouse towards the button on left side and clicking on the link near the bottom (third one down) with a number "1" in the kanji. Courtesy to Anime News Network for explaining how to view the video. Although, if the video is too tiny and low-res for you, BeeTV also placed it onto YouTube in a higher resolution.
