Directory & Guide of Free, Low Cost, and Legal Anime on the Internet

(For the article, please click here.)

Psst…want some free, or cheap, anime on the Internet?

Well, you came to the right spot! A listing of streaming and downloadable content vendors all offering anime for no cost (or just a little one)—and all of it’s legal!

This directory primarily covers sites and services available in the North American region. However, a number of these and their content can still be accessed from other areas around the globe, so feel free to check out the ones that interest you. In addition, while some regions may be locked from certain content or features that North America (and/or others) can access, you may, in turn, be able to access some that they cannot. Nearly every site listed below is in English (unless noted otherwise), though other language options (both for the site and subtitles) may exist.

The directory is kept up to date as often as possible (*layout subject to change). Though an anime title may disappear from a service at any given time, it may still be present or reappear on another service. It may even return at a later date, though it is never a guarantee and it may even appear with different audio options (ex. in Japanese with English subtitles now, instead of English dubbed).

Additionally, while most of the sites and services residing on this list host anime that maybe suitable for children, there may also be works that contain content not suitable for younger audiences. Please use discretion when searching or allowing your child to access to browse through them and preview/research shows beforehand, if possible.

And finally, this disclaimer: --HardDoor is not affiliated with or responsible for any of the sites/services listed here. Please use discretion with anything involving downloading and pay content. Sites and services may cease operation without any prior notice. HD is not responsible for the quality of or any of the content listed on any of the sites/services, or any issues concerning them. Please contact the sites/services themselves with any problem you may encounter.--

And with that…happy viewing!

Anime Sols

Platform: PC/Mac (via web browser)
Streaming: Yes [Free]

Download Client: None
Audio: Japanese (with English Subtitle options)

This ambitious collaboration between Japanese studios Tezuka Productions, Tatsunoko Production, and Pierrot, the subsidiaries of broadcaster Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation, and the upstart company of veteran translator Samuel Pinansky (Quarkpro) differs very much from other similar efforts. The service's ultimate goal is to primarily sell DVD sets of classic shows--a few of which have never been available in North America before. Thus, they offer free streaming video of the titles for fans to peruse (registration required, which is also free).

Those interested can pledge a select amount towards the production of that show's box set, with perks increasing with greater pledge amounts (ex. $5 = "Character Letter"… $40 = "DVD-Box and Sticker"… $100 = "Name in DVD, DVD-Box, Character Settings"… $500 = "Original Production Plan + Color Postcard Set + Character Settings + Mini Poster + Special Audio Message + Name and Message in DVD + DVD-Box + Sticker"). There are no obligations to pledge (much like a PBS or radio pledge drive), but of course, it is something you are encouraged to do…

While certain "support packages" may have quantity limits and may differ from show to show, you will only be charged once the set goal is reached and you can also change or remove your pledge by contacting the site. There is also a time limit on pledge periods, which also mean a show's videos may only be available for that duration. Current titles taking pledges can be found here.

Bandai and its corporate parent Bandai Namco set their own YouTube channel up as a means of showing anime and other programs related to their toy and game products. Its Japanese, U.S., and European divisions each have their own channel with largely the same content, with the American channel hosting English language videos, most of which have the option of subtitles in numerous other languages, such as Japanese, Spanish, and even English itself. These can be toggled through at the lower right-hand corner of the video player and can also be turned off. Let's Go! TAMAGOTCHI remains its sole showcase.

The Sony-owned Crackle video portal hosts a good deal of content from the company's entertainment sector and others, all for free. A producer of anime as well, a few works airing on their Animax network are also available on their service, as are titles from fellow stablemate Aniplex USA, Toei Animation (subtitled) and FUNimation.

Because Animax commissions its own English dubs for international audiences, some shows may have a different dub cast (and adaptation style) than what is present in the U.S. releases (i.e. Samurai X (int'l)/Rurouni Kenshin (U.S.)) or may have a dub despite the title's lack of a release in the U.S. (i.e. Nodame Cantabile). Although, such as in the case of Blood+, the dub may be the same as that in the U.S release (it's was commissioned by Sony's American distributing arm, rather than Animax). For kaiju eiga fans, a few Godzilla movies are also available at the site.

Crunchyroll

Platforms: PC/Mac (via web browser), iOS, Android, PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, various smart TVs & media players
Streaming: Yes [Free, Pay]
Downloadable: No

Formerly the largest host (and a seller) of illegally-distributed fansubs, Crunchyroll has since reversed full-course after a major investment from a venture capital firm and a deluge of support from and interests of Japanese and American companies alike. Now, it boasts one of the largest libraries of legal anime content on the Internet, with providers stretching from Japanese broadcasters and studios to American distributors and subsidiaries (Asian live-action content is also hosted).

Nearly every show is available for free (though ad-supported), but those wanting 480p resolution and beyond (with no advertisements), wish to catch simulcasted shows as soon as they air in Japan, or view titles on other devices beyond the computer will need to subscribe, with rates beginning at $6.95 /month (for anime and live-action separately; $11.95 /month for both). As an added perk, there are a handful of shows only available to those that do and video quality can stretch as high as 1080p on newer titles.

In addition to the main Crunchyroll app available on iOS and Android devices, there are a number of popular shows that have their own dedicated apps. These are essentially "shortcut apps" to the videos themselves and feature content not available in the more general main app, such as expanded show information and character bios. Such series apps include Naruto Shippuden, BLEACH, Shugo Chara! (My Guardian Characters), Gintama, Sword Art Online, and Attack on Titan, and there are also apps for KDrama and Hong Kong entertainment content.

DAISUKI

Audio: Japanese w/ English Subtitles, English Dubbed [Mostly Available to Paid Subscribers Only)

FUNimation.com boasts one of the largest libraries of anime online. Fueled by its sizable stable of titles, the site reflects the distributor's strong participation in digital distribution, with entire series being made available for free viewing in either Japanese with English subtitles or dubbed in English. "Elite Video Subscribers", however, can have access to recently-licensed and -released shows (including their dubs) and subscriber-only content--along with uncut, HD-quality video and no advertisements, at $7.50 per month.

Some videos are self-hosted, while others are hosted by Hulu (though it does not necessarily mean you will also find them there...), and among those include their dealings with Toei Animation and the critically-lauded "noitaminA" anime block from Fuji TV. On a side note, while FUNimation may obtain streaming rights for a show, they may only go as far as that and does not necessary mean that rights to or will release a show through physical means.

FUNimation's service also comes in two app forms on iOS and Android devices, mirroring the site's aspects. The free version gives you access to such things as clips, trailers, a few select free episodes, whereas the $9.99 paid version of the app makes many more shows and content available, ads-free.

Though content availability varies by region or licensing terms (for example, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood cannot be viewed in North America, as it is licensed by regional distributor FUNimation, but can in other countries) there are some crossovers that are present, such as titles His and Her Circumstances and Queen's Blade (NSFW). Other available works include Koi Koi Seven (NSFW) and IZUMO.

GONZO DOGA

Content such as PVs (promotional videos), commercials, a few short works are available there, though those looking for a little more substance may also want to check out the studio's own self-titled channel, which contains the first episodes of a few shows (in Japanese, with no subtitles).

As is the case with much of its other content, the titles are available for free (ad-supported) at a high-quality (HD-quality, when available, for Hulu Plus subscribers ($7.99 /month). TV and movie works alike can be found from large swath of companies, such as FUNimation, Viz Media, Enoki Films USA (through GONG), The Anime Network, Media Blasters, Bandai Entertainment, Toei Animation, in subtitled or dubbed (where available) formats. Availability on devices requires a Hulu Plus subscription.

An industry leader and revolutionary service, Apple's iTunes Store helped pave the way for the wave of digital distribution with its expansive library of low-cost songs and video that could be enjoyed on either the company's equally ubiquitous and groundbreaking iPod media player or on one's own computer. Anime companies have been privy to the reach of this service and has thus made some of their offerings available there. Due to how they work, the links listed ahead will automatically open the iTunes application and display the page there and not in one's browser (outside of a "redirect" page).

There are no set genre sub-sections for "anime" in either the "TV Shows" and "Movies" sections (which does not even have an "Animation" grouping). However, TV anime can be readily found amongst the animated TV shows and can be purchased by episode or by season. A good number of anime films can also be found simply by the keyword "anime" in the search box (non-anime types may also pop up in the results). Lastly, one may want to pay close attention to the Viewers Also Bought on the pages of each show, which may also help you find more titles.

To start things off, the first episodes of IkkiTousen: Dragon Destiny, Queen's Blade: The Exiled Virgin, and Kanokon can be found on their respective site pages and are dubbed in English. A word of caution: the shows offered, while not outright hentai, are definitely for mature audiences and should be considered NSFW, as well.

Originally starting life as a live-streaming network (the first anime-based one of its kind) and later a unique hybrid service offering a VOD "catch-up" option, Viz Media's Neon Alley has since switched to an all-VOD format, after establishing a partnership with Hulu to be its content host. As a result, NA's website replaced VizAnime.com and NA itself became their parent company's brand for all of their streaming content on Hulu. As with most other content on Hulu, Neon Alley/Viz Media shows are free to watch on Hulu.com (and, by extension, NeonAlley.com) via PC/Mac, but a Hulu Plus subscription ($7.99 /month) is required to watch them on other devices. Titles, including entire series and films, are available on rotation in subbed and dubbed forms. Viz Media is the primary content provider.

The videos, save for new Pokémon series airing straight from Japan (as noted above), are dubbed in English.

Toonami

Four years after its bow and an April Fool's trip down memory lane-gone-widely-successful, Adult Swim resurrected the landmark Toonami block in full, superseding its previous "Action" block. Its online service sports currently-airing titles from the likes of FUNimation, Bandai Ent., and Viz Media, which can be found through their respective links. While the episode lineup may change weekly and what is presented may be limited, eligible cable/satellite subscribers can access more episodes (featuring the "Gold" label) by logging in/selecting their service provider (if present) when prompted. Also posted on Toonami's site are its ubiquitous and popular music videos, consisting of montages from its shows.

Toonzaki

Platform: PC/Mac (via web browser) [Video Source: Hulu]
Streaming: Yes [Free]
Downloadable: No
Download Client: None
Audio: Japanese w/ English Subtitles, English Dubbed

Presented by 4Kids Entertainment, Toonzaki is an anime streaming site featuring titles from the distributor, as well as FUNimation Ent., Sentai Filmworks, and Aniplex USA. Despite their reputation as a children's anime provider, the service is aimed at the teenage and above crowd, meaning some works are not quite for the little one's eyes. While most of the videos are from the latter and actually originate from Hulu, Toonzaki also plans on hosting exclusive content by its own means.

Viki

Platforms: PC/Mac (via web browser), iOS, Android, various smart TVs & media players
Streaming: Yes [Free]
Downloadable: No
Streaming: Client: None
Audio: Japanese w/ English Subtitles

Born of the fruits of a class project at Harvard and Stanford, Viki rapidly grew into a global force, streaming content in around 40 countries and in 150 languages, all to the tune of 2+ billion views. But perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Viki's service is that of its community-based subtitling. In what could be described somewhat as "legalized" fansubbing, Viki members collaborate on subtitle translations and timing into various languages on videos(though moderators are present to assure quality and deter trolling).

Part of those efforts and views entail the anime that is hosted on the site, which--through its partnership with Tezuka Productions-- includes an impressive number of Osamu Tezuka anime and other classics, some of which have never been available before in North America or elsewhere. It also holds an even more impressive amount of Korean drama and KPop, not to mention a slew of other content worldwide (available content may vary by country).

YouTube

Audio: Japanese w/ English Subtitles, English Dubbed

The great pioneer of online video hosting, YouTube, has sought out partnerships over the years in hopes of supporting legal viewing of copyrighted works and to curtail illegally posted ones on their site. With the advent of digital distribution across the board and anime being among its largest categories of videos, they naturally caught the attention of many companies from both sides of the Pacific. Along with the site's support of posting entire series and movies, as well as HD-quality video, a myriad of anime companies and producers have come aboard, from FUNimation, Kadokawa, The Anime Network, and Manga Ent., to Kodansha, TMS, Lantis, GONG, and 4KidsTV.

The link provided here points towards TV shows that being made available on YouTube (for the United States, at least; content and availability may vary country by country). Most video tend to be subtitled, but there is still a substantial amount of dubbed ones. Some shows may also be found only in the rental section (i.e. the subbed version of a show could be available for free, but the dubbed version can only be rented for a small fee). The site is also available in app form across a growing number of devices, but certain site features and video content may unavailable, and app features may vary across them.

-:Anime Shows on Parade:-
While there are many, many anime works that can be found in the sections above, there are a few that you may not quite find there. This section covers anime that may be seen elsewhere on the Internet, had preview episodes or sneak peeks available on other sites (that were long forgotten), are more-obscure ONAs or independent shorts, or may only be available for a preview period or special occasion for a limited time. As shows are licensed and appear at the venues above, they will be removed, so try checking them out there or in one of the "Free Anime Directory Updates" if you no longer find them here.

A little-known Original Net Anime (ONA) from animation studio manglobe (Samurai Champloo, Ergo Proxy), the comedic short-length fantasy tale (or "web comic", as the studio calls it) had the distinction of debuting first with an English language track with Japanese subtitles, and a Japanese language track (with, curiously enough, the same Japanese subtitles from before still present) afterwards.

Yawarakame is the eccentric brainchild of Those Who Hunt Hunt Elves and Dokkoida?! mangaka Yu Yagami and animation studio ufotable (Kara no Kyoukai, Ninja Nonsense, Dokkoida?!). Beside the tale centering on a soft-shelled turtle, perhaps its most unique feature is that seiyuu Miyuki Sawashiro (Di Gi Charat's Puchiko, Bakemonogatari's Suruga) voices all of the characters in the characters in it. One can view the first episode (two minutes in length) by moving their mouse towards the button on left side and clicking on the link near the bottom (third one down) with a number "1" in the kanji.
