:boxing: Boxing Bits :03:01.13: Broner Is the Problem, & So Is Pot…

Posterizing, posturing, and pot penalizations highlighted the last few week's of boxing in this return installment of Boxing Bits!

:Sat.02.16.13: Broner Beats Rees

Gavin Rees was as game as game could be and with heart to spare, but his body and ebbs in composure ultimately did him in versus the talented Adrian "The Problem" Broner, who stopped him within five. The final result was largely expected, but Broner's pomposity and narcissistic complacency in his own abilities has led to him allowing his opponents to land an increasingly large amount of punches on him, as if to show that he no one can do him harm. Rees, to his credit, employed some fine movement and tenacity in scoring good, flush shots on the open Broner, who shook them off but didn't exactly do much about them, either.

The latter would go on to capitalize on the former's deficiencies and vulnerabilities with his capable hand- and combo work  but it feels too much as if Broner has become so entrenched in himself and what he can do, that he has actually regressed as a fighter. Let us also not forget the fact that he has not faced true top opposition yet, and letting yourself fall into a routine of getting tagged just because you can take it will get you a few quick trips to the canvas against such foes. As I said on Twitter about Broner's young career at this point, I easily see him getting demolished by a more well-rounded or solid fighter. Hair combs and illusions of grandeur can't dig you out of a few 10-8 round or worse…

:Sat.02.16.13: Rodriguez Dismantles Former MMAer Tahdooahnippah

Want to know what it looks like when you only fight soft, local opposition? Then look no further than when Devin Rodriguez pummeled the artificially-enhanced record of George Tahdooahnippah away…

:Wed.02.20.13: Mayweather To Fight Guerrero

I am very happy for Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero getting that big fight date--and against his desired choice of Mayweather, no less--especially after all of his personal struggles and his wife's bout with cancer. That said, I don't believe he will be as big a match-up against him as some believe. He's tough and has improved his game by a good margin in his most recent fights, but I don't know how well he can handle a slick pugilist like Mayweather. He could definitely land a few clean hits on him, but PBF's speedy combo work and greater skill set could prove troublesome for Guerrero.

:Sat.02.24.13: Showtime & Mayweather Sitting in a Tree…

One of the bigger items in the pass week was Mayweather bolting HBO for Showtime, and the network was  die-hard in its pursuit to please the fighter. Reminiscent of ESPN crush on Tim Tebow, Showtime (whihv was also hosting his co-promoted boxing event) wasted no open air slurping him up and kissing his posterior, topped by the be-all, end-all of creepy stalker behavior pitiful network hero-worshiping: the presentation of birthday cake on live TV (which was coming up). It's to be expected to talk up your new business partner on a broadcast, but that was just embarrassing…

:Thurs.02.28.13: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Gets High Fine For Postive Pot Test

Chavez, fresh off (?) his loss to Sergio Martinez last year (though nearly stealing a win after almost stopping him in the final round), found himself $900,000 lighter, and his schedule more open by nine months, after testing positive for marijuana following the fight. Even though such an extreme consequence was likely enhanced it being his second strike (and the fine being a percentage penalty of his purse), it still seems rather excessive for something that I don't believe many would consider to be a PED…
